Getting your site listed with the search engines is important. There are hundreds of search engines and directories, and many services that will list you with a certain number of them. But many of these directories will bring you little or no traffic, so beware that bigger is not always better. I use one called Self-Promotion.com, and I've been pleased with the service.
Of course, there are some directories, such as Yahoo, where you simply must submit your site manually . Before you submit to Yahoo, be sure to read all the instructions available at their site and follow them to the letter !
Then there are online classified ads. Thousands of sites provide free classifieds. To find them all can be very time-consuming. Use search engines to find the best ones for your target market. As a general rule, free classified ads don't get much response.
Exchanging links with related sites can bring in a surprising amount of traffic. Take a word of advice here, though. Be sure to work with complementary sites, not direct competitors.
Advertise in E-ezines. Do a search on "ezine directory", and you'll uncover numerous directories of ezines that accept advertising. Some will give you a limited number of free ads, and most will sell you ad space at a low cost.
